Veteran political analyst Brit Hume expressed reservations Monday on Fox News about French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent diplomatic efforts.

There have been ongoing negotiations, and President Donald Trump suggested that the war in Ukraine could see an end within weeks. Macron’s visit, Hume said on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” highlights a deep-seated fear.

“Macron is here because he’s afraid that the president and his rush to get a deal to stop the fighting in Ukraine will do so on terms that would open the door to Russia as simply reinvading and and just a matter of a short period of time or even a few years,” Hume said.

Hume said that such a deal would not only undermine European security but could also tarnish the reputations of those involved on the global stage.

“What’s needed are security guarantees strong enough to deter that, and he’s concerned that without them that it’ll be a bad deal. It will stain everybody involved and certainly will be a threat to the rest of Europe,” Hume said.

Bret Baier sat down with Macron to discuss the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia and the potential for resolution. During the conversation, Baier asked President Macron about recent statements made by President Trump, who has expressed optimism about the war concluding within weeks.

“I hope so, and I think everybody has in mind all the losses and casualties and what the Ukrainian people leave during the past three years. And they’ve been very brave, and they just protected their territory and their sovereignty, and I think the arrival of President Trump is a game changer,” Macron told Baier.

This situation reflects broader anxieties among European leaders about being sidelined in discussions that directly impact their security, especially in light of Trump’s direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. European leaders, convened by Macron in Paris, echoed these sentiments and emphasized the need for increased defense commitments and greater self-reliance in security matters to counterbalance the shifting dynamics of U.S. foreign policy.

During his presidency, former President Joe Biden failed to secure a peace agreement, and a phone call between President Trump and Putin effectively ended a three-year U.S. strategy aimed at diplomatically isolating Russia. The Military Times reported in Nov. 2023 that Russia maintains a significant manpower advantage in nearly all war zones against Ukraine, possessing double the number of soldiers and a substantial superiority in air and ground support vehicles. Furthermore, Russia has augmented its forces by incorporating approximately 10,000 soldiers from North Korea as of Nov. 2024.
