Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger said on Friday that she will refuse to work with President Donald Trump to create jobs for her state.

Spanberger told “PBS NewsHour” that Trump is “not the right person” to rebuild Virginia’s economy because of his so-called “attack on the federal workforce.” Much of the federal workforce are not receiving paychecks because of the Democrats’ vote to shut down the government on Oct. 1.

“You position yourself as a consensus builder, someone who works across the aisle. Would you work with President Trump on areas like job creation?” a reporter asked.

“I think that, you know, you don’t work with the arsonist who burns down the house to rebuild it. And in this particular case, the individual who’s responsible for an absolute attack on the federal workforce is not the right person to help rebuild our economy,” Spanberger said.

Her opponent, Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, stated that Spanberger is unfit for office because her “hatred for Trump outweighs” her “love for Virginians.”

“When your hatred for President Trump outweighs your love for Virginians… you’re not fit for office,” Sears wrote on X.

Spanberger has refused to condemn Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones after leaked text messages showed that he fantasized about the deaths of a former Republican house speaker and his two children. After the text messages leaked, Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that Spanberger is “weak and ineffective” while calling her out for her silence on Jones.

The governor hopeful complained about having to address Jones’ messages during an Oct. 22 appearance on “Next Question with Katie Couric.” During the same program, Spanberger did not give a clear answer on whether she supports biological men using women’s bathrooms, though she has a lengthy record of voting in favor of allowing males into these spaces.

Spanberger voted for the Equality Act, a piece of legislation to amend federal civil rights laws by adding sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes. She also voted against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act which aimed to bar men from competing in women’s sports.

Polls ahead of Tuesday’s election show that Spanberger is leading by an average of 7.4% against Earle-Sears, according to RealClear Politics.
