Actor Eric Dane, known for his role in “Gray’s Anatomy,” has died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He was 53.
Dane died Thursday, People reported, citing a statement from Dane’s family.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement continued.
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received,” according to the statement. “The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
The actor, known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan — a.k.a. McSteamy — in “Grey’s Anatomy,” announced he had ALS 10 months ago.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he told People then. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Dane’s other TV and film credits included “Euphoria,” “Burlesque,””Valentine’s Day,” “Marley & Me” and “The Last Ship.”
In 2004, he married actress Rebecca Gayheart. They welcomed daughters Billie and Georgia in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
