A man suspected of helping plan attacks on Jewish sites in Germany was arrested Wednesday in Denmark, according to Germany’s top prosecutor.
According to The Associated Press, the suspect, identified as Tawab M., an Afghan national, allegedly promised to obtain a weapon for a third person and persuade them to attack Jewish targets in Germany.
Prosecutors said Tawab M. had been in contact with Ali S., a Danish national accused of collecting information on Jewish individuals and locations in Berlin for Iranian intelligence. The discussions reportedly took place in late May.
Ali S., who was arrested in June, is being prosecuted separately.
Authorities said Tawab M. has a record of acquiring weapons, accessories and explosive devices in Denmark. He was taken into custody on suspicion of agreeing to incite another person to commit homicide. The arrest warrant was issued last month.
He will be brought before a German judge after extradition to determine whether he will remain in custody pending formal charges. It was not immediately clear when that would occur.
German security forces have strengthened protection for Jewish and Israeli institutions following the 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June.
Germany has been a firm ally of Israel and maintains strained relations with Tehran. In October, Germany ordered the closure of Iran’s three consulates in the country following Tehran’s announcement of the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, an Iranian German prisoner abducted in Dubai in 2020. The move left Iran with only its embassy in Berlin.
