British authorities charged a 22-year-old Afghan migrant with murder and attempted murder after a triple stabbing Monday in West London left one man dead and two others injured.

Investigators said Safi Dawood attacked a father and son before turning his knife on 49-year-old Wayne Broadhurst, who tried to intervene while walking his dog, according to BBC. Emergency crews arrived around 5 p.m. and treated three victims for stab wounds.

Broadhurst died at the scene, while the 45-year-old father remains in the hospital with life-changing injuries. His 14-year-old son has since been released after treatment. Police said Dawood knew the father and son but had no connection to Broadhurst.

Officials said their top priority is securing justice for the victim and ensuring the safety of those directly affected by the incident.

“Our priority is securing justice for the man who sadly died and the others who were injured during this incident. Sharing this footage could impede future court proceedings and cause further distress to those directly impacted by these events, as well as their loved ones,” Chief Superintendent Jill Horsfall said in a statement.

Officers arrested him shortly after the assault. He reportedly suffered a medical episode while in custody and was taken to a hospital before being returned to police detention.

Greener Ealing Ltd said that Wayne Broadhurst worked as a binman for the company before he was killed in the attack, BBC reported. The firm described him as a respected and dedicated employee and extended its condolences to his family and colleagues.

“This is a devastating loss. Wayne was a well-respected and dedicated member of our team who made a real contribution to the work we do and to the residents we serve,” Katarina Pohancenikova, managing director of Greener Ealing Ltd, said in a statement.  “We ask for the privacy of Wayne’s loved ones to be respected as they come to terms with this appalling news.”

Dawood entered the United Kingdom illegally in a truck in November 2020, received asylum and permission to remain two years later, and was not living in government housing at the time of the attack. Authorities have charged him with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of an offensive weapon. Dawood is expected to appear before the court on Thursday.
