As a parent, I understand the anxiety that comes with not knowing what a medical visit will cost, combined with the urgency to make health decisions to benefit your family. It’s hard enough when your child is sick, but to add uncertainty around cost isn’t just inconvenient, it’s a harsh burden on families trying to make the best choices for the health and safety of their children. Thankfully, the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda is turning the tide with a powerful principle: clear, real prices before care.

For too long, healthcare costs have been shrouded in secrecy. Like grocery shopping blindfolded, parents have been expected to “sign blank checks” for medical services they couldn’t price-check in advance, let alone shop for other physicians and treatments.

Recent reports underscore the consequences, more than 100 million Americans are in medical debt making healthcare costs the leading cause of bankruptcy. Last year alone families borrowed a staggering $74 billion to cover medical bills. These aren’t just numbers. These are families delaying or forgoing essential care to avoid a crippling financial blow when they do go to the hospital.

Real healthcare price transparency can make a significant impact on families. Under the ethos of price transparency, the Trump Administration is developing resources – like an advanced explanation of benefits (AEOB) – for parents to navigate the maze of medical pricing and to enable tools and information designed to shine light on the costs before a single procedure or test.

Through executive orders and a rule proposed by CMS, the Administration is mandating that hospitals and insurers post actual prices, not vague estimates, in standardized formats that make comparisons simple for parents. This move empowers families with the concrete financial information they need so they can prioritize care for their family and budget effectively.

Beyond executive actions, legislative efforts are bolstering the initiative. The “Patients Deserve Price Tags Act,”introduced by Senators Roger Marshall (R‑KS) and John Hickenlooper (D‑CO), would further require price disclosure up front, ensuring parents know what they’ll pay before stepping foot in a doctor’s office.

These measures are not bureaucratic window dressing — they’re transformational and practical for parents. Imagine comparing care options like you would compare hotel or airline prices: side by side, upfront, and with no hidden charges. That’s real empowerment for parents, who already weigh food, housing, and education costs daily.

Surveys reflect that this isn’t a niche issue. A whopping 96 percent of Americans support healthcare price transparency. More than 90 percent agree this is essential to truly Make America Healthy Again. Policies like these aren’t partisan, they’re common sense and give parents the opportunity to choose what’s right for their family.

Price transparency doesn’t just help with planning, it can also restore trust. When parents know what to expect, they’re more likely to seek preventive and routine care rather than delaying until minor issues snowball into emergencies, which benefits everyone. Children get timely treatment, emergency rooms don’t get overwhelmed, families don’t fall into financial despair, and hospitals are held accountable for overcharges they can no longer hide.

Even for a healthy child, price transparency brings invaluable peace of mind and allows parents to make smart decisions, protect our kids and stay on stable footing. Parents can weigh options—public hospital vs. outpatient clinic, in-network vs. alternative provider—and choose wisely. With data available, technology can emerge to make that comparison easier than ever the same way you order an Uber or shop online.

The MAHA agenda isn’t just about policy—it’s about people. It’s about giving parents the power to make informed decisions that protect health and family budgets. No more blind bills. No more impossible choices between care and necessities.

Healthcare shouldn’t be a gamble but a transparent transaction. With real prices before care, informed parents can do what they’ve always wanted: make the best decisions for their children’s wellbeing without sacrificing financial stability.

So, let’s get behind clarity, fairness, and family-focused reform. Parents deserve real prices before care, and President Trump is working to deliver them. Nothing matters more than our kids, and we shouldn’t have to fight for transparency when their health is on the line.

Alleigh Marré is Executive Director of American Parents Coalition and a mother of four.
