New York City mayoral candidate Democrat Andrew Cuomo is seeking to take his local campaign to a national scale despite multiple ongoing and previous controversies.

The former Governor of New York said in an interview with POLITICO that his campaign will focus on pushing against Trump’s proposed cuts to Medicaid not only in his potential mayoral jurisdiction, but across the country. Cuomo slammed President Donald Trump’s decision to cut Medicaid’s funding, adding that the move could cost Republicans the House of Representatives.

“He’s cutting Medicaid. Medicaid is not a blue-city, blue-state situation,” Cuomo told POLITICO. “That is in every state. That is a lot of red Congressional districts. And he could lose the House on cutting Medicaid if you organized it and got it moving.”

Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” as passed by the House, would cut approximately $600 billion from Medicaid, according to an estimate from the Congressional Budget Office. The bill disallows benefits to illegal aliens, those who are enrolled more than once, people who are choosing not to work and those who are already receiving benefits elsewhere, according to Indiana Republican Representative Erin Houchin.

Cuomo said he would become a “spokesperson, advocate, organizer” for Medicaid, telling POLITICO he “would spend eight years in Washington — go to that U.S. Conference of Mayors, go to the National Governors Association.”

The former governor is currently under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly lying under oath in Congress about his administration’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer referred Cuomo for a criminal investigation to the DOJ in late April.

“The last time Andrew Cuomo had a say in health care, thousands of New York’s most vulnerable perished in nursing homes due to Cuomo’s blatant incompetence and disregard for science,” White House spokesman Kush Desai told the DCNF. “Cuomo is not the white knight that Democrats are looking for to stop Republicans’ commonsense effort to protect Medicaid by taking illegal immigrants off the program.”

During the pandemic, then-Governor Cuomo used altered numbers and statistics, achieved by convincing the health department to underreport numbers, to create an illusion of New York’s superior handling of the virus. While the numbers used by the governor’s office suggested New York had one of the lowest nursing home death rates, unedited data suggested the state had one of the highest nursing home and hospital fatality rates.

Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 after a report by New York Attorney General Letitia James concluded the then-governor had sexually harassed and then silenced many women. 85 state assembly members had gone on the record supporting impeachment at the time.

The Cuomo campaign did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The former governor’s mayoral campaign also hit major turbulence in the last few weeks, first being fined $675,000 by the New York City Campaign Finance Board for improper collusion with a super PAC. In May, his campaign attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter to a union for distributing a mailer with reasons not to vote for him.
