Federal authorities in Texas just delivered a major blow to a brutal human smuggling network that prosecutors say treated migrants like disposable cargo — and the disturbing details are turning heads across the country.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, working alongside state and local law enforcement, dismantled a violent smuggling ring operating out of South Texas. The operation ended with multiple convictions and long prison sentences for gang members involved in kidnapping, extortion, and the sexual assault of a pregnant woman.
One of the key players, 22-year-old Rodolfo Daniel De Hoyos, known by the nickname “Rufles,” was sentenced Monday to more than 14 years in federal prison. Prosecutors said De Hoyos participated in a conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens that resulted in serious bodily harm and placed victims’ lives in immediate danger.
The case was part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide crackdown launched during the Trump administration aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations involved in human trafficking and illegal immigration.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, De Hoyos and his associates kidnapped a family of migrants that included a man, a pregnant woman, and a seven-year-old child. What followed was a nightmare.
Authorities say the smugglers sexually assaulted the pregnant mother while holding the family hostage for ransom. They forced relatives to send money, successfully extracting at least $1,000. But the threats didn’t stop there. Investigators say the criminals warned the family they would kill the child and sell the unborn baby if additional payments were not delivered.
The violent smuggling ring eventually unraveled thanks to a multi-agency investigation led by ICE Homeland Security Investigations and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Several other agencies, including U.S. Border Patrol and local police departments across Texas, assisted in bringing the suspects to justice.
De Hoyos was actually first caught in 2021 when a Texas state trooper stopped him transporting three migrants carrying hiking gear and camouflage backpacks. At the time, he admitted he was being paid $1,500 to move them to Del Rio.
But the investigation continued, ultimately tying him to the later kidnapping case that led to his latest conviction.
He is not the only one facing serious time. Juan Antonio Flores, 36, received more than 17 years in prison for coordinating smuggling trips. Co-conspirators Tomas Estrada-Torres and Nelson Abilio Castro-Zelaya were sentenced to more than 12 and 15 years respectively.
Another member of the operation, Guatemalan national Edwin Alfredo Barrientos-Mateo, known as “Waches,” was hit with a staggering 30-year prison sentence.
Four additional conspirators have already pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
Federal officials say the case exposes the grim reality behind human smuggling operations.
U.S. Attorney Justin Simmons issued a blunt warning, saying smuggling organizations see migrants as nothing more than profit.
“When they look at an illegal alien, all they see is a dollar sign,” Simmons said. “Do not trust them with your life because the only life they really care about is their own.”
Authorities say the crackdown is continuing as Operation Take Back America targets the criminal networks fueling illegal immigration across the southern border.
