President Joe Biden appears to believe his grandfather may have been eaten by cannibals during World War II.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Biden spoke about his grandfather, Ambrose Finnegan.
“He was shot down, he was in the Army Air Corps before there was any Air Force,” the president said.
He went on:
“He flew single engine planes, reconnaissance flights over New Guinea. He volunteered because someone couldn’t make it. He got shot down in an area where there were a lot of cannibals at the time.”

Biden went on, “They never recovered his body. But the government went back and checked and found parts of the plane.”
An article from 1944 detailing the incident listed Finnegan as a passenger on a plane that went down, but was not shot down.
Additionally, it was not clear where Biden developed the claim there were “a lot of cannibals,” nor was it clear why he mentioned it in the story.
