Former President Joe Biden updated reporters about his cancer treatment in Delaware on Friday after delivering remarks at a Memorial Day event.

The speech was Biden’s first since his personal office announced his prostate cancer diagnosis on May 18, CBS News reported. Biden expressed optimism and informed reporters that he had begun treatment for his cancer.

“The prognosis is good. And you know, we’re working on everything,” he said. “And it’s moving along. So I feel good.”

After confirming he had begun treatment, a reporter asked what it entailed.

“It’s all a matter of taking a pill, one particular pill. And for the next six weeks, and then another one,” the former president said. “And the expectation is we’re gonna be able to beat this. It’s not in any organ. My bones are strong. It hasn’t penetrated. So I’m feeling good.”

Biden’s personal office statement characterized the cancer he has as “a more aggressive form of the disease” that has metastasized to the bone, but added that it could be effectively managed.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement said. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

A reporter also asked Biden how the diagnosis has been for his family.

“We’re all optimistic about the diagnosis. Matter of fact, one of the leading surgeons in the world is working with me,” Biden said. “And he had diagnosed the same exact thing 32 years ago. He’s alive and well and doing very well. So we’re optimistic. We’re optimistic.”

During Biden’s speech on Friday, he couldn’t quite finish reciting the most famous line in the Declaration of Independence.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal, endowed by their Creator, with certain unalienable rights, life, liberty, pursuit of ha — we made it!” he shouted. “That’s who we are! That’s what makes America the most unique nation in the world. Literally, not figuratively.”

Biden also commemorated the ten-year anniversary of the death of his son Beau during his speech, according to CBS News.

“This day is the 10th anniversary of the loss of my son Beau, who spent a year in Iraq. And to be honest, it’s a hard day,” he said, adding, “Being with all of you quite frankly makes things a little bit easier, it really does. So thank you for allowing me to grieve with you.”
