Months after he was caught referring to supporters of President Donald Trump as “garbage,” former President Joe Biden said in a speech Tuesday that “everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.”
Biden delivered his first public remarks since leaving office Tuesday, attacking Trump-era policies, urging national unity, and avoiding any mention of his 2024 exit. During the speech, Biden said every American, including the more than 60 million living with disabilities, deserves to be treated with the utmost respect. Biden delivered the speech in Chicago while addressing the national conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled.
“It’s about dignity. Simple dignity. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. Regardless of their standard, regardless of their economic system, regardless of who they are,” Biden said.
Biden said dignity is important across all spectrums of American life, including workplaces, schools and communities.

“Making sure that more than 60 million Americans who are living with disabilities are treated with dignity is who we are as Americans. That’s what it’s about. I mean it. Dignity at work, at school, in their communities, in every corner of American life,” Biden said. “Laws like the ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] need advocates like you. You’re the ones that keep it going. God love you.”
In October, Biden called Trump supporters “garbage” during a Zoom call with Voto Latino, reacting to a comedian’s remark at a Trump rally. After facing backlash, Biden posted on X to claim he was criticizing the comedian’s rhetoric, not Trump voters.
This isn’t the first time Biden mocked someone publicly. In 2020, he called a New Hampshire student a “lying dog-faced pony soldier” after she asked a pointed question about his campaign performance.
Biden has had a history of insulting people going back as far as 1987. In 2019, while running for president, Biden called an Iowa voter a “damn liar” and challenged him to a push-up and IQ test. The exchange happened after the voter questioned Biden’s involvement in Ukraine, prompting a sharp and personal response.
