Chaos erupted inside Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Friday night when a sedan barreled through the entrance of a busy terminal, shattering glass and sending travelers and employees scrambling for safety.
According to the New York Post, the crash unfolded around 7:30 p.m. at the McNamara Terminal, where Delta Air Lines workers and passengers were gathered near the ticketing area.
A black sedan blasted through the glass doors and came to a stop amid debris, according to local reports and footage from the scene.
Video circulating on social media shows the vehicle sitting inside the terminal as startled onlookers watch.
The driver, an unidentified man wearing a Detroit Lions jersey, stepped out of the car with his hands raised, appearing disoriented and speaking incoherently as security officers rushed in.
“The response was so quick thank God with the cops and TSA and everybody,” traveler Ali Khalifa told WXYZ. “That all happened in seconds.”
Nearly a dozen security officers and airport personnel surrounded the man and escorted him away as he continued shouting unintelligibly, according to the footage.
Authorities quickly secured the area, which was littered with broken glass and damaged fixtures.
“Our team is gathering information, and we hope to have an update shortly,” airport officials said in a statement reported by WDIV.
The Wayne County Airport Authority confirmed that the driver struck the ticket counter after entering the terminal. He was taken into custody, and officials said the cause of the crash remains unknown.
Six people were treated at the scene, though Delta Air Lines later confirmed that no injuries were reported. Three Delta employees were struck by debris and evaluated by medical personnel as a precaution, the airline said.
Despite the dramatic incident, Delta indicated that operations were not significantly affected by the crash.
Photos from the scene show metal barricades positioned in front of the terminal entrance, raising questions about how the vehicle managed to breach the building. Authorities have not provided details on how the barriers were bypassed.
“The driver is in custody and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time,” airport officials said. The Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department is investigating the incident.
Officials have not released the driver’s identity or announced any charges as the investigation continues.
