The transatlantic relationship, once the strongest, most pivotal, and strategic alliance in the world, is fraught and frail. It’s time we reevaluate foreign policy relationships in a way that demands the excellence of other nations and our own. The new way forward to building an indestructible bond with our allies is by invoking a new strategy of foreign policy—an America First, Nations First approach.

As the U.S. paves the way with President Trump’s America First agenda, it is not alone nor is it isolationist; rather, it is a movement that can be inherited by all nations across the globe. Nations that participate in the Nation’s First agenda reap the benefits of a stronger and safer nation.

The America First Policy Institute’s Nations First Foreign Policy Initiative sets out to establish foreign policy objectives dedicated to shaping a world in which nations across the globe enact policies that place their own interests of prosperity, national sovereignty, and rule of law first.

Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. has shown that a country focused on its own prosperity and security is a better equipped partner. Nations must take responsibility for their own security, maintain reliable and affordable energy supplies, cultivate resilient economies, and maintain a credible defense.

No More Endless Nation Building, Interventions, And Bail Outs Paid For By American Taxpayers

It is in the United States’ best interest to lead and strategically engage with nations that safeguard their interests of national sovereignty, prosperity to include fair and robust trade, abundant energy, rule of law, credible defense, and protection of culture. The Nations First Foreign Policy initiative acknowledges that a prosperous and secure nation is a more strategically beneficial ally. Nations First ensures that the American working people, families, and communities are at the center of every diplomatic decision, by holding nations accountable to contribute their fair share of an alliance. Strong Allies, Strong Trade, Strong America.

Should the U.S. adopt a Nations First foreign policy approach?

President Trump has proven that this model works. His administration continues to reinvigorate American manufacturing, restore credible deterrence, and demand trade arrangements that are fair, balanced, and benefit American workers. In his second term, President Trump has strengthened alliances with countries that share our commitment to sovereignty and decreased the American exposure to unaffordable international arrangements that cost billions of dollars and hurt our economy. These policies illustrate a simple truth: nations thrive when they prioritize their own citizens and engage the world based on mutual benefit. Thus, the future will not be shaped by the flimsy promises of globalist dependency or by sprawling institutions working in opposition to the needs of ordinary citizens.

President Trump continues to prove that America First policies are invaluable and required to succeed.  Here at AFPI, foreign policy is not reactive or nation building. Instead, it is identifying areas where diplomacy ensures nations take the necessary steps to forge their own successful path, while maintaining a firm America First agenda. It’s time our allies and trading partners follow our successful economic, conservative, and security policies. The era of dangerous globalism is over; it’s time to become Nation’s First.

Carla Sands is the former U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. She currently serves as the Chair of the America First Policy Institute’s Foreign Policy Initiative and is a Distinguished Senior Fellow for Energy & Environment at AFPI. Samantha Flanigan serves as the Global Coalitions and Foreign Policy Coordinator at America First Policy Institute. Prior to joining AFPI, Flanigan worked in the civilian defense sector, supporting the intelligence community, and as a political strategist. She is also an active member of the U.S. Army Reserves.
