According to Maui Now, the Salvation Army partnered with Walmart for an “Maui County’s Angel Tree Distribution” event on Nov. 18 and 19.
This effort went to benefit children ages 15 and under who have been displaced or otherwise affected by the devastating wildfires that tore through the area in August.
Charmaine K. Hauanio-Kuewa, divisional director of development for The Salvation Army Hawaiian and Pacific Islands, stated, “Financial difficulties should never stand in the way of a child’s joy during the holidays.”
“The Angel Tree Distribution event is a testament to our commitment to helping Maui families overcome these challenges and we are grateful for the generosity and long-time collaboration we share with Walmart to lift the spirits of our community,” she added.
Chris Pierce, store manager for Maui Walmart noted, “It is our honor to be able to give back to our neighbors during this time of need and to be allowed to bring some comfort and joy during the holidays with the donation of these toys.”
The Good News Network reported Walmart donated 35,000 toys spanning multiple events.
Two elementary school parties supplied gifts for about 800 children and then a family Winter Wonderland Toy Shopping Spree gave 1,800 different families the opportunity to spread good cheer.
The Good News Network noted a spokesman for Walmart stated, “One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was when large gift bags filled with toys were distributed to each child present at the event, which was kept under wraps, for it to be a complete surprise to the children.”
