Democratic Delaware Sen. Chris Coons sidestepped a question on Wednesday when Fox News host Martha MacCallum asked him if he would back former Vice President Kamala Harris if she planned to run for president again in 2028.

Harris announced on X Wednesday that she would not be entering the race to become governor of California following reports she was deliberating her political future and whether she would seek the governorship or make another attempt at the White House in 2028. On “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” MacCallum asked Coons if he would “encourage her to run for president again” if she sought his counsel and whether he would “be supportive if she wanted to run for the Democratic nomination in 2028,” but he did not answer and pivoted to other topics.

WATCH:

“Martha, 2028 is a long way off. And first we need to focus on the challenges right in front of us here in Congress,” Coons said. “Our president, Donald Trump, and his OMB [Office of Management and Budget] director are trying very hard to shut this government down, and on a bipartisan basis, those of us who are appropriators are trying to keep it open and trying to do our job and meet the needs of the American people — keeping costs down and keeping the national defense strong and investing in health care.”

“And that’s in contrast with a president who wants to take away health care from millions of Americans,” he continued. “That’s the issue right in front of us. 2028 is literally years away.”

Harris wrote in her statement that she was excited to work on “helping elect Democrats” nationwide and “sharing more details in the months ahead” regarding what she intends to do in the future.

Ahead of Harris’ Wednesday announcement, some California House Democrats told CNN they were not enthusiastic about the idea of the former vice president potentially running for governor of their state.

“There’s no groundswell for her candidacy. In fact, I think it would only fire up Republicans and hurt our ability to win the four to five seats that we need to win to win the House and hold on to three seats that we just flipped in 2024,” one California House Democrat, who requested anonymity to speak freely, told CNN.

“She comes in with baggage,” the Democrat added.

Political analyst Mark Halperin predicted on “The Morning Meeting” Monday that Harris will ultimately retire from politics.

“I don’t think she’ll end up being a candidate for governor of California,” Halperin said. “And I think she’ll find it’s so hard raising money to run for president that she’s done with politics would be my guess.”

The former vice president lost all seven swing states and the popular vote to Trump in November. When she ran for president in 2020, she only garnered 844 votes in the Democratic primary and received zero delegates, according to archived election data.
