Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s approval among New York voters has plummeted to a new all-time low, according to a Siena University poll released on Tuesday.

The new survey found that Schumer’s favorability dropped to just 32% — marking his lowest favorable rating in the Siena poll’s two-decade history — while 55% of respondents viewed him unfavorably. Meanwhile, only 45% of Democrats rated Schumer’s leadership favorably, compared to 43% of Democratic voters who gave him an unfavorable rating.

Schumer’s office did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

“In February 2005 – the first Siena Poll in its current incarnation – Schumer had a 63-20% favorability rating,” Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said in a statement. “In July 2005, he had his all-time best favorability rating, 70-22%. December 2016 – the month before he became Senate Democratic leader – was the last time Schumer had a positive favorability rating with Republicans, 55-37%. Today Schumer is viewed unfavorably by 74% of Republicans and 61% of independents. With Democrats, his favorability rating is barely positive, 45-43%, down from 52-36% in September.”

“Schumer is viewed unfavorably by a plurality of New York City voters, and strong majorities of downstate suburbanites and upstaters,” Greenberg continued. “At the same time, it’s worth noting that [Democratic New York] Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has an overall 42-37% favorability rating. But it’s 62-20% with Democrats and 55-27% with City voters.”

The newly released Siena poll comes after several other surveys released this year have shown Schumer facing low approval numbers. A Siena University poll released in April found that Schumer secured a 39% favorability rating and a 49% unfavorable rating.

By comparison, Schumer secured a 42% favorability rating among New York State voters in September, according to a separate Siena Poll released on Sept. 16.

Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky suggested on Nov. 10 that Schumer is “no longer capable of leading the Democratic Party.” Moreover, “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin said the same day that if Schumer “cannot keep his caucus together,” he “needs to go,” in reference to eight Democratic senators defying the Senate minority leader by voting to advance a deal to reopen the government.

A host of Democratic lawmakers and candidates, as well as left-wing organizations, called for Schumer to be removed as leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus after eight members of his caucus defied him to negotiate a successful deal with Republicans to end the 43-day government shutdown on Nov. 9. Schumer, however, did not support the deal.

Still, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has continued to publicly express support for Schumer’s leadership, saying on Nov. 10 that “the overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, have waged a valiant fight over the last seven weeks,” Axios reported.

Congress’ overall approval rating recently dropped to just 15%, according to a Gallup survey released on Oct. 22.

The Siena Poll was conducted Nov. 10 to 12, among 802 New York State registered voters. The poll has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
