Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) is brushing off President Joe Biden’s verbal missteps as the result of his trying to overcome a stutter.
During an interview on NBC News’ “TODAY” Friday, Clyburn sought to downplay concerns about the president’s health and verbal flubs.
“For those of us who are real close watchers of Joe Biden, we do know that he sometimes mangles words and faces,” the congressman said,
He added, “But, all of that is almost natural for people who grew up stuttering. And they do focus a little more. And when you focus a little more, you tend to lose the flow.”
When asked if he was blaming the president’s missteps on a stutter, Clyburn said, “I didn’t say that.”
“He doesn’t stutter now. He is still working to overcome the stutter of his childhood,” he added.

Clyburn’s comment comes as Biden is facing pressure to step aside following a disastrous debate performance in which his voice was coarse, he trailed off while answering questions, and claimed he “beat Medicare.”
However, during a major press conference on Thursday, Biden referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump.”
He also mixed up the presidents of Ukraine and Russia earlier that day.
