House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) is urging voters to look beyond more than “what you may or may not be paying for gas,” and warning the United States could follow the path of Germany in the 1930s.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, the top House Democrat said, “This country is on track to repeat what happened in Germany, when it was the greatest democracy going, elected a chancellor that then co-opted the media.”

“This past president called the press the enemy of the people. That is a bunch of crap… And that is what’s going on in this country,” he continued.

His comments come after President Joe Biden reiterated his warning about the alleged threat to democracy posed by so-called “MAGA Republicans.”

The South Carolina Democrat also blamed the “demonization” of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for the assault of her husband.

However, he does not see Biden’s rhetoric as equivalent to the attacks on Pelosi.

During his speech, Biden urged Americans to “ask a simple question of each candidate you might vote for: Will that person accept the legitimate will of the American people and the people voting in his district or her district?  Will that person accept the outcome of the election, win or lose?”

“The answer to that question is vital. And in my opinion, it should be decisive. On the answer to that question hangs the future of the country we love so much and the fate of the democracy that has made so much possible for us,” he added.

The president also insisted what is at stake in the Nov. 8 election is “not just the policy of the moment.”

While polls have found Americans list inflation as their top concern ahead of the election, Clyburn told Fox there is “more” than just inflation to consider.

“I think that people should be voting in their own self-interest. And their self-interest is much more than what you may or may not be paying for gas or a loaf of bread,” he said.

Clyburn added, “The question is, are we going to have a society that everyone can participate in? Or are we going to have an autocracy?”

He also defended his decision to object to certifying Ohio’s electoral votes in the 2004 election because “we didn’t call anybody about a change in the votes. We just voted on a process.” He added: “To protest a process is what we did. Nobody stormed the Capitol. Nobody disrupted the count. We only voted to protest a process, which is a legitimate thing in this country.”

In Mar. 2020, Clyburn called then-President Donald Trump racist, and warned the U.S. “could very well go the way of Germany in the 1930s.”

“I used to wonder how could the people of Germany allow Hitler to exist. But with each passing day, I’m beginning to understand how. And that’s why I’m trying to sound the alarm,” he added.
