CNN host Jessica Dean asked Democratic California Rep. Ro Khanna on Tuesday whether former President Joe Biden delivering a public speech for the first time since leaving office would actually help his party.

Biden is slated for a Tuesday evening speech in Chicago that will cover the significance of Social Security, according to The Washington Post. Khanna, on “CNN News Central,” declined to answer whether Biden’s speech would be “helpful,” but expressed hope that the former president would advocate “for due process of the law” and pivoted to criticize President Donald Trump’s administration for deporting alleged MS-13 gang member Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

“I know that you have repeatedly recently said about the Democratic Party that the old guard isn’t cutting it,” Dean said. “Do you think it’s helpful for former President Biden to be speaking right now?”

“Well, he’s a former president. He certainly can speak. And hopefully he’ll speak out for due process of the law,” Khanna said. “What the Trump administration is doing is unconscionable by defying the Supreme Court, by not doing anything to bring Abrego back. I mean, they sent Abrego to El Salvador and this prison. It’s not that Abrego was abducted by El Salvador. They need to direct El Salvador to return him.”

The Trump administration mistakenly deported Garcia to his home nation of El Salvador. The Supreme Court ruled that America should “facilitate” his return, but the Trump administration is arguing that it does not need to do so.

NewsNation political contributor Chris Cillizza predicted on March 27 that Biden would be in for a “really bad” two-month period as two books likely to portray him negatively were set for publication. One of them, “Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,” came out on April 1 while the other, “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” will be out on May 20.

Biden informed multiple Democratic leaders that he was willing to raise funds, campaign and do whatever it took to assist the party in countering Trump, individuals close to the former president told NBC News in March. He also met with newly elected Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin in February to offer his assistance, according to sources.

“I don’t think anyone’s clamoring to have Joe Biden campaign for them right now. But I think by the end of May, he will be someone that no one wants around … Joe Biden may want to come back onto the campaign trail to help Democrats, but I don’t think there’s much appetite for it now,” Cillizza said.
