President Donald Trump secured a massive civil rights settlement with Columbia University on Wednesday.

The Trump Administration announced a $200 million settlement with Columbia University to address what it said were severe violations of federal civil rights laws, according to the email sent to the Daily Caller. Under the agreement, Columbia University will no longer engage in unlawful racial discrimination in hiring, admissions, or university programming. The university will also grant access to critical data, enabling a rigorous review of its compliance with merit-based hiring and admissions practices.

As part of the settlement, Columbia will make a substantial payment to resolve civil rights violations, including a $20 million compensation package for Jewish employees who faced discrimination following the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks on campus. This marks the largest-ever public settlement for employment discrimination and antisemitism.

Beyond the settlement, Columbia will undergo a comprehensive review of its regional programs, particularly those involving the Middle East. This will include new faculty appointments to promote diversity of thought and a more balanced representation of ideas. Columbia will also be required to enhance campus safety, crack down on disruptive protests, and enforce rules against masked demonstrations.

“This agreement marks an important step forward after a period of sustained federal scrutiny and institutional uncertainty. The settlement was carefully crafted to protect the values that define us and allow our essential research partnership with the federal government to get back on track. Importantly, it safeguards our independence, a critical condition for academic excellence and scholarly exploration, work that is vital to the public interest,” said acting President Claire Shipman.

Negotiations between Columbia University and the Trump administration began in March after the administration announced it would withdraw $400 million in funding due to the university’s failure to address numerous anti-Israel incidents on campus. These protests led to multiple arrests and the takeover of a campus building, during which a university employee was reportedly held hostage.

Many students were not disciplined until more than a year later. Accusations surfaced against university officials for inflaming the situation when private messages revealed they expressed admiration for the students’ actions and hoped to achieve favorable outcomes on their behalf.
