Bill Maher just did what most of America was already thinking — but didn’t have the guts (or HBO contract) to say out loud.

Senator Cory Booker, New Jersey’s favorite bachelor-turned-fiancé, dropped what was supposed to be a heartwarming Instagram announcement of his engagement… and instead triggered an internet-wide cringe spiral. The photos? Let’s just say they looked less like a love story and more like a pharmaceutical ad — and not the good kind either. We’re talking that weird walking-through-a-sunlit-field kind of ad, where the couple stares wistfully at nothing in particular while a voiceover lists side effects like “explosive diarrhea” and “sudden loss of credibility.”

And Bill Maher — bless him — didn’t let it slide.

On his Friday night show, Maher tossed Booker a congratulatory nod, then immediately tore into the engagement photos with the kind of snark we used to get from actual late-night comedians before they all turned into DNC interns. “They make me think, ‘Don’t let moderate to severe ulcerative colitis stand in your way,’” he joked, as the images flashed across the screen like a Cialis commercial set in a Whole Foods parking lot.

But let’s be real — Maher wasn’t just riffing on aesthetics. This was a dig at something deeper.

Booker, after years of projecting that he was too busy, too serious, too mission-driven for a relationship, suddenly appears in a glossy photo shoot like he’s auditioning for the cover of Vogue for Vegans. And oh look — it just so happens to coincide with election season heating up. You don’t need a tinfoil hat to see the coordination. The sudden pivot from lone wolf to lovebird? Politically convenient, to say the least.

Remember, this is the same guy who tried to play the “hope and change” remix during the 2020 primaries, complete with dramatic pauses, teary-eyed speeches, and poetic ramblings about justice, compassion, and “conscious empathy.” But now that he’s posing with his new fiancée in what looks like a cross between a Goop ad and a wellness retreat brochure, the vibe is less “presidential” and more “what are you selling and where’s the free sample?”

And Maher’s not wrong to ask: What is this supposed to signal?

Because while Booker waxes poetic in his caption about “savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life,” most voters are wondering if he even remembers what everyday life looks like for actual Americans. You know — the ones stuck paying $6 for a gallon of gas, watching cities spiral into crime-ridden chaos, and wondering why their kid’s third-grade teacher spends more time on TikTok gender theory than basic math.

Meanwhile, Cory’s out here staging engagement photos with the lighting budget of a Nancy Meyers film.

It’s not just tone-deaf. It’s political performance art. And Maher — who’s no conservative, but at least occasionally tells the truth — hit a nerve precisely because nobody else in the media has the spine to call it what it is: another round of carefully crafted optics designed to give a floundering politician a shot of mainstream attention.

🚨NEW: Bill Maher *ROASTS* Cory Booker’s engagement photos🤣

“His engagement photos look like an ad for prescription drugs.”

“These pictures don’t make me think, ‘Great, now we can run for president without the stigma of being a bachelor.’”

“They make me think, ‘Don’t let… pic.twitter.com/ypKqMke1R9

Let’s be clear. Nobody’s knocking love. Good for Booker. Marriage is a beautiful thing, and conservatives of all people get that. But what’s exhausting is the transparency — the marketing of personal milestones as political assets. It’s the assumption that voters are too dumb to connect the dots. One day, he’s a bachelor senator waxing spiritual about veganism and hope. The next, he’s in a L.L. Bean catalog posing with his “best friend” as if we’re all supposed to swoon and forget the policies he pushes.

Spoiler: we didn’t forget.

And no amount of gauzy lighting and filtered Instagram captions is going to paper over the fact that the Democratic Party is in full rebrand mode — trying desperately to polish their bench before 2028 comes knocking. Sorry, but if this is the soft launch of “Cory Booker 2.0,” it’s not working.

In fact, it’s begging for a sequel… in parody form.

So sure, congrats, Senator. But next time, maybe skip the photo shoot and focus on something more pressing — like, say, getting a grip on inflation, border security, or the inner-city crime waves you claim to care so much about.
