Comedian Dave Smith said Tuesday that President Donald Trump “destroyed” his presidency by waging war against Iran.
Smith argued on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” that Trump’s 2024 base of voters are no longer uniformly standing with him due to the Iran conflict, and predicted that Democrats will take over in the 2026 midterm elections. He also suggested that no possible contender in the administration can win the next presidential election in 2028.
“This is going to tank Donald Trump’s presidency. We’re already past the point of that,” Smith said on Tuesday’s show. “The Democrats are going to win the House and the Senate. It’s going to be impeachments and subpoenas and investigations for the next two years. And I don’t think anyone from this administration can win the presidential [election] in ’28 at this pace.”
WATCH:
Trump ran on an America First platform and promised during the campaign there would be no new wars in his presidency.
Recent surveys found most Americans are against U.S. involvement in the Iran war, including a University of Maryland poll which found that 49% of respondents disapprove of the war and 21% approve. A CBS News/YouGov poll also found that 57% of respondents believe the war is going “somewhat” or “very badly,” while 43% said the conflict is turning out either “very” or “somewhat well.”
Smith warned that the war appears to be turning into a “clear disaster” for Trump, which will only divide his base even more.
“But if this doesn’t turn into any type of win and if it turns into a clear disaster, which it already seems to be, that’s only going to hurt him more and more and more,” Smith said. “You know, I think look, Piers, it’s despite the fact that it is not in my incentives in some way as like, a political commentator, like I hope this whole thing just works out great. And then I know that all the people who don’t like me will say, “Haha, you were warning that this would be a disaster.’ I would much rather take that deal and live in that.”
“But Piers, the other element there is that we had the 12-day war in the summer and I’ve certainly heard at the time, some debates that we did on your show and many others, and I’ve heard nothing since then on social media, ‘like ha, you guys were so stupid.’ You were warning about exactly what we’re seeing right now which is what all of us were warning about who were critics of the 12-day war,” Smith continued.
Iran’s blockade on the Strait of Hormuz has caused energy prices to surge on a global scale, which caused the average price of gas to rise close to $4 per gallon as of Tuesday. Voters who elected Trump in 2024 largely named the economy and immigration as their top issues, particularly after inflation reached a record-high under former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Joe Kent resigned from the administration over the Iran war, stating in his resignation letter that a “misinformation campaign” by Israel influenced Trump to take military action in Iran. Kent received a standing ovation at his first public event Thursday since resigning from the administration.
