Well, well, well — what do we have here? Another day, another Democrat in hot water. But this one’s not just your run-of-the-mill shady bookkeeping. No, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., is now staring down a federal indictment for allegedly looting disaster relief funds — you know, the kind meant to help people after hurricanes, pandemics, and all the other crises that real Americans have to crawl through — and rerouting that cash to fund her own campaign. Because when the chips are down, apparently some Democrats see an opportunity… to write themselves a fat check.
According to a Miami grand jury, the congresswoman and her brother Edwin allegedly played a little shell game with $5 million in FEMA funds. That’s five million taxpayer dollars, meant for emergency COVID-19 response, allegedly laundered through a web of accounts to fund her 2021 congressional bid and pad some personal pockets. Prosecutors claim they used a network of straw donors and backdoor contributions to wash the money clean. If convicted, she could be looking at up to 53 years in prison. That’s not exactly a slap on the wrist — that’s a one-way trip to orange jumpsuit retirement.
FBI Director Kash Patel laid it out plainly: she and her family “allegedly stole money from FEMA and then laundered it through friends.” And if the indictment holds up, it’s not just some clerical error. It’s a full-blown operation of misappropriation, fraud, and good old-fashioned political greed. You’d think someone sitting on the House Foreign Affairs and Veterans’ Affairs committees might have an ounce of respect for public service. Instead, she allegedly treated federal disaster funding like her own personal ATM.
And yet — no response from her office. Nothing. Not even a boilerplate denial or deflection blaming “misinformation” or “right-wing attacks.” Just radio silence while the walls close in. Because let’s be honest, when you’re backed into a corner and the receipts start piling up, sometimes the best PR strategy is to disappear.
Naturally, Republicans aren’t having it. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., said he’s filing a motion to censure her and boot her from all committees — and honestly, it’s the least that should happen. The Florida GOP wasted no time calling for her resignation, saying, “This is absolutely disgusting. She must step down NOW!” But here’s the thing: if recent history tells us anything, Democrats don’t step down. They dig in, cry foul, and hope the media will memory-hole the story within a news cycle or two.
Tomorrow morning I will be filing a privileged motion to censure Rep. Cherfilus McCormick and remove her from all committees.
This is one of the most egregious abuses of public trust I have ever seen. Stealing $5 million in taxpayer disaster funds from FEMA of all places is… https://t.co/xsqm0oqOWw

But this one’s a little too rich to ignore — literally. We’re talking about a lawmaker allegedly swiping money intended for disaster victims and using it to bankroll a political career. It’s hard to get lower than that. You can almost hear the campaign slogans now: Vote for me — I may be under federal indictment, but at least I’m well-funded!
Oh, and let’s not forget, this wasn’t exactly a surprise. She was already under investigation in 2023 by the House Ethics Committee over campaign finance violations. That probe must’ve hit pretty close to home, because now we’re looking at a full-blown DOJ takedown. And yet, in 2024, voters gave her another term. Maybe now they’re wondering if that third term came with an asterisk.
But don’t expect MSNBC or CNN to plaster this across the screen. No breathless panels or “breaking news” tickers here. Because when it’s a Democrat allegedly misusing government money and defrauding FEMA, the media reflexively loses interest. But if a Republican so much as forgets to file a receipt for a fundraiser dinner, it’s a 10-day scandal with round-the-clock coverage.
JUST IN: Dem U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick charged with stealing $5 million in FEMA funds.
Federal prosecutors say Cherfilus-McCormick & her brother received a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract through their family healthcare company.

The double standard is exhausting — but it’s also the reason stories like this matter. This isn’t just about one corrupt politician (allegedly). It’s about an entire political culture that treats your tax dollars like Monopoly money, that abuses trust and assumes accountability only flows in one direction.
So the next time Democrats start lecturing about “protecting democracy,” maybe someone should ask them to start by not allegedly stealing from disaster relief funds. That’d be a nice first step.
