Erik Menendez was denied parole after a hearing Thursday.
NBC News reported that Erik Menendez, 54, will be able to seek parole again in three years.
Erik Menendez and his brother, Lyle Menendez, 57, were convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.
This summer, a judge in Los Angeles ruled the brothers did not pose “unreasonable risk” and resentenced them to 50 years to life.
This ruling superseded their previous sentence of life in prison for the shooting deaths of their parents. Is also me any the could seek parole immediately.
Lyle Menendez will appear before the parole board Friday.
The brothers’ convictions in 1996 came after two trials over three years. They claimed they were abused by their father.
Prosecutors stated otherwise, pointing to how Lyle Menendez reloaded his shotgun before shooting his mother in the face. They said the brothers were after their parents’ money.
When Erik Menendez spoke at his resentencing hearing, he described the crimes as “cruel and vicious.” He added he was “directly responsible for it all.”
Many family members have advocated for their release from prison.
The brothers have attended college, established a “beautification” project at the San Diego prison they are housed and helped inmates with severe disabilities, court filings show.
Former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón previously said the two had been “exceptional” inmates and recommended that they be resentenced.
Current DA Nathan Hochman tried to withdraw Gascón’s recommendation, but failed.
He said the brothers had not taken responsibility for more than a dozen lies he said they told about the murders.
“The Menendez brothers have never fully accepted responsibility for the horrific murders of their parents, instead continuing to promote a false narrative of self-defense that was rejected by the jury decades ago,” Hochman said in a statement before the hearings.
