The president of this year’s United Nations climate conference, COP30, argued that it is “good news” China is flooding the energy market with cheap green technology, the New York Times reported Monday.
China has been flooding the green energy market with their technology, which COP30 President and Brazilian diplomat André Corrêa do Lago argues is “good news … if you are worried about climate,” NYT reported Monday. Conversely, some critics are sounding the alarm over how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) might leverage its market dominance to “facilitate CCP espionage and sabotage.”
Founder and CEO of State Armor Michael Lucci told the Daily Caller News Foundation that China’s dominance in the green energy sector is a Trojan horse to cement CCP control over the energy market.
“When deals with the Chinese Communist Party are too good to be true, they are,” Lucci told the DCNF. “China’s strategy to make the U.S. reliant on their cheap ‘red tech’ is two-fold: one, hurt American energy security by weaning us off fossil fuels in favor of energy sources like solar and wind where their tech dominates; and two, make our critical infrastructure reliant on Chinese products that contain kill switches to facilitate CCP espionage and sabotage. Their strategy is clear as day, which is why states across the country have passed legislation to strip Chinese devices out of our grid. Our European partners should do the same.”
Corrêa do Lago did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
China dominates the green energy market, maintaining a stranglehold on critical minerals and magnets necessary for technology like solar panels and electric vehicles (EVs). Chinese EVs also accounted for more than 70% of global production in 2024, according to data from the International Energy Agency.
From a climate point of view, the developing countries are showing solutions,” Corrêa do Lago told the NYT. “You can’t insist that China has to lower its emissions…[and then later] complain that China is putting cheap E.V.s all over the world. … If you are worried about climate, this is good news.”
Developing countries — including Brazil where COP30 is being held this year — have taken advantage of China’s cheap green energy technology, spanning from wind turbines, to solar panels and EVs, the NYT noted. Brazil’s main trading partner is China, and Chinese companies have poured billions into energy projects in the emerging nation.
Chinese green energy investments have topped $220 billion since 2022 worldwide, according to John Hopkins University’s Net Zero Policy Lab. China’s “cleantech” exports also hit a record high in 2025, according to data from the green energy think tank known as Ember.
The Chinese vice premier, Ding Xuexiang, urged countries to lower trade barriers for green technology at COP30, according to the NYT.
Notably, experts like Lucci and U.S. government officials are concerned over some Chinese green technology imported into America reportedly containing hidden radios and “rogue devices,” according to multiple Reuters reports.
Officials are reportedly reassessing the risk posed by Chinese-made devices found in solar panels and solar-powered highway infrastructure, according to March and September Reuters reports.
The Trump administration skipped COP30, where almost 200 countries will be gathered until Nov. 21, according to the UN’s website. President Donald Trump has been an outspoken critic of climate change policy, calling it the “greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world” in front of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
