Craig Melvin is stepping away from NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage as the search intensifies for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother, a disappearance that has shaken the Today show family and cast a long shadow over the network’s plans for Milan.
Melvin, 46, had been scheduled to host Olympic Late Night from Italy between February 7 and February 9. That plan is now off the table. NBC confirmed he will remain in the United States, with Ahmed Fareed taking over the late-night hosting duties. Fareed was already slated to be part of the daytime coverage in Milan, making the transition swift but somber under the circumstances.
The decision comes as Melvin has found himself at the emotional center of a deeply personal story involving his longtime co-host. On Thursday morning’s Today broadcast, Melvin struggled to hold back emotion as he introduced a video plea from Guthrie and her siblings regarding the disappearance of their mother, 84-year-old Nancy.
“Most days, of course, Savannah greets you right here from this desk, but this morning, our dear friend has a very different message,” Melvin told viewers, his voice heavy, before explaining that the family wanted the public to see the video in its entirety.
In the recorded message, Guthrie, 54, appeared alongside her siblings Annie and Camron. She described her mother in loving detail, thanked supporters across the country for their prayers, and then addressed a chilling possibility head-on. For the first time publicly, Guthrie acknowledged reports that her mother may have been abducted and that a ransom demand may exist.
“We too have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media,” she said. “As a family, we are doing everything that we can.”
Guthrie then turned her attention directly to whoever may be holding her mother, making it clear the family is willing to communicate but needs proof that Nancy is alive. She cited concerns about manipulated images and voices, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the family’s caution.
“We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her,” Guthrie said. “We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”
Her message ended with a direct appeal to her mother, blending faith, resolve, and urgency. Guthrie described Nancy as strong and deeply loved, promising that her children would not rest until she is found.

Nancy Guthrie vanished Saturday evening after being dropped off at her Tucson, Arizona property by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. As of now, no suspects have been identified. Law enforcement has said there is no known threat to the wider public, though investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Nancy was targeted because of her connection to a high-profile television host.
The case has also been complicated by conflicting accounts about how the alarm was first raised. Initial reports suggested a fellow congregant contacted the family after Nancy failed to attend church Sunday morning. However, a source later told the Daily Mail that Nancy had not physically attended St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in years and had instead watched services online since the Covid pandemic. The church livestreams its services, making it impossible to know who is watching remotely.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that a congregant contacted the family around 11 a.m. Sunday after Nancy did not arrive at church. Authorities continue to investigate all leads, and FBI agents have been spotted at the home of Guthrie’s sister Annie during the search.
The personal crisis has led NBC to reshuffle its Olympic lineup more broadly. Guthrie will no longer co-host the Opening Ceremony with Terry Gannon on February 6 at Stadio San Siro. Veteran broadcaster and former professional tennis player Mary Carillo, preparing for her 17th Olympic Games, will step into that role.
NBC Olympics leadership emphasized its support for the Guthrie family, praising Carillo and Fareed for stepping in during an extraordinarily difficult moment. Behind the scenes of the global spectacle heading to Milan, one story remains far more important than medals or ratings: the urgent search for an 84-year-old mother and the family waiting desperately for answers.
