Amid a crime surge, officials in one California city are urging residents to buy airhorns and security bars for their homes.
According to CNN, Oakland, California, is experiencing a surge in crime so large police have “advised residents to use air horns to alert neighbors to intruders and add security bars to their doors and windows.”
NAACP Oakland Branch President Cynthia Adams has also urged local officials to take action to ensure public safety in the city.
In a statement, Adams accused elected officials of failing to do their job and creating a “heyday for Oakland criminals.”
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office described that depiction of the situation as “a false narrative.”
However, CNN notes, “While the sides appear to disagree on how the narrative is framed, one truth appears undeniable: Oakland is buckling under a rise in crime.”

The network pointed out homicides are down 14% in the city over the last year, which is some good news.
Yet it explained burglaries are up 41% and robberies are up over 20%.
One resident, Kristin Cook, told CNN she is considering moving to Texas due to the crime, “I love Oakland. … I can’t take it anymore.”
“I got to the point I was too scared to leave my house,” she continued. “My son is about to start driving… I’m terrified my son is gonna be killed at a stop sign because he’s driving an Impala, and I just can’t, I can’t risk it.”
Urging residents to take measures to keep themselves safe is fine. But it is kind of an argument for the Second Amendment for home and self-defense.
Liberals like to tell people the government and law enforcement are supposed to protect them and keep their town or city safe — so they do not really need a gun.
Yet being told to buy an airhorn and turn your home into a fortress to protect yourself and your neighbors is a tacit admission that you cannot always count on the government for your safety.
If you’re looking for an explanation as to why a lot of Americans want guns for home defense, what’s happening in Oakland is a great example.
