An individual calling into C-SPAN called on Democrats and independents to stage an “insurrection” against President-elect Donald Trump despite saying he does not support insurrectionists.
The caller from California told C-SPAN’s Greta Brawner that he cannot support Trump because he is allegedly an “insurrectionist,” and he therefore believes that Trump’s political opponents should carry out an insurrection on the president-elect.
“Sorry, I cannot support an insurrectionist, I just can’t,” the caller said. “And I would really love to see Democrats and independents do an insurrection on Donald Trump.”
WATCH:
The call came in about an hour before the House’s vote on the speakership, where the current House Speaker Mike Johnson holds the most narrow chance of being reelected in nearly 100 years. The newly opened 119th Congress will vote Monday to certify the electoral votes that handed Trump a victory in the 2024 election.
Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin said in March that House Democrats were working on a bill to disqualify Trump from serving as president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits elected officials from holding office if they committed an insurrection. The congressman’s statement followed the Supreme Court’s overturn of Colorado’s decision to disqualify Trump from the ballot, stating that Congress has the power to enforce the “insurrectionist clause” in the Constitution.
Colorado, Maine and Illinois all attempted to disqualify Trump from the ballot under the “insurrectionist clause.”
Trump endorsed Johnson in late December to be reelected as speaker and had reportedly made calls with Republicans who were unsure about their votes.
