The years-long, wide-reaching cover-up of former President Joe Biden’s obvious cognitive decline is reaching a fever pitch, and the time has come to answer an important question: what should be done about it? Ever since his basement presidential campaign during the fog of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, valid questions have been asked about Biden’s mental state.  Time and time again, those narratives were shut down by biased media elites and anti-Trump Democrat politicians. But now, with new damning evidence coming to light in new books, the stock answer of “nothing to see here” no longer cuts the mustard.

For millions of Americans who rely on common sense and intuition in their lives, Joe Biden’s alarming deterioration became a foregone conclusion long ago despite the Trump-deranged mainstream media asking them not to believe their own eyes. As it turns out, it appears that the Biden Administration – the least transparent in history – was working hand in glove with its political allies in the liberal media to prop-up the failing former president for the sake of clinging to power at all costs. The lunacy that transpired during the 2024 presidential election shouldn’t end with just embarrassment and humiliation for Democrats.  The American people deserve long overdue truth and accountability.

If we’ve learned anything over the past ten years about how the left operates in the context of President Donald Trump, it’s that they never admit fault and never give an inch, because lying to the American people is a far better option than allowing Trump to win. So, it’s no surprise that they chose to cover-up for Biden instead of coming clean. Coming clean would have required unpleasant conversations about the national security implications of not having a completely functioning president and prompted questions about why the 25th Amendment was never seriously explored as a viable option to remove Biden from power.

It’s not enough just to talk about the Biden cognitive decline and the 11th hour coup to replace him with Vice President Kamala Harris. It’s time for Congress to organize a bicameral select committee to provide the American people with some much-needed transparency about exactly what happened. Unlike the sham January 6th Committee, this committee should be composed of Republicans and Democrats because the American people are entitled to a thorough investigation with members from both sides of aisle fully participating. The disturbing allegation that President Biden wasn’t actually running the country during his tenure in office is a big problem.

The proposed select committee should start by calling the authors of recent books about the 2024 campaign to answer questions in a public setting. Chris Whipple should talk about White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain describing Biden as “out of it” during debate preparation. Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes should testify about why they concluded Biden had become “a shell of himself.” And Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson should tell the American people about President Biden failing to recognize George Clooney and the discussions about perhaps needing to put the former president in a wheelchair. Tapper could also take the opportunity to explain to Congress why he — and scores of other mainstream media figures — didn’t seek to reveal the truth about Biden’s obvious decline until after the election.

A key piece of evidence that can help answer questions about President Biden’s mental fitness is the audio recording of his interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur. The Department of Justice should release this recording to the public in its entirety without delay. On account of the new book details and the Democrats’ desperate move to oust Biden as their democratically chosen nominee for president, far more details about why Special Counsel Hur’s report described President Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory” are warranted. Congress should question all special counsel staff who were present during their infamous interview with the former president.

But a thorough investigation surely can’t end there.  The highest levels of the Biden Administration must also answer questions under oath about exactly what was going on with Joe Biden behind closed doors. This of course starts with Vice President Harris; what did the vice president know and when did she know it? The same goes for former Biden officials such as Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and various senior members of Biden’s West Wing staff, like former Chief of Staff Ron Klain and former Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who publicly described President Biden as “sharp as ever.”

Congress must find out if unelected staff members were running the country during Joe Biden’s four years in office. Former First Lady Jill Biden is another key witness who can shed light on how scores of decisions were being made on a daily basis, so it doesn’t happen again. Additionally, the troubling allegations about the Biden White House’s addiction to the autopen must not be overlooked. It’s one thing if the president wasn’t personally signing every form letter, but it’s something entirely different if officials and staff were putting his John Hancock on declarations, executive orders, and pardons he may not have been in the loop on.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s non-answer of “we’re looking forward” when asked about the Biden cognitive cover-up will no longer suffice. The American people deserve honesty and Republicans in Congress must lead the charge to get answers to questions that have been piling up for years.

David N. Bossie is president of Citizens United. He served as deputy campaign manager for Donald J. Trump for President in 2016.
