Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair David Hogg claimed in an interview published Friday that he wants to “fight” for Democrats even if he gets forced out of his role at the DNC.

Hogg, who was elected to serve as one of the DNC’s vice chairs in February, told Newsweek that while he would “prefer” to remain in his leadership role, he will “fight to build the strongest Democratic Party possible” even if he is ousted. Hogg’s comments come after Semafor reported Tuesday that Kalyn Free, a Native American attorney who Hogg defeated in the vice chair election, is challenging the results of the race.

The DNC plans to hold a virtual meeting on May 12 to hear the challenge from Free, according to Semafor. Free claimed that she lost a “fatally flawed election that violated the DNC Charter and discriminated against three women of color candidates,” and is asking the DNC for “two new vice chair elections,” Semafor reported.

“The party has been around for over 170 years, and it has evolved a lot, obviously, since its beginning,” Hogg told Newsweek. “And I think what the moment calls for is making sure that we have the strongest people possible to fight in our party.”

Leaders We Deserve, a political organization Hogg co-founded, announced plans in April to primary certain incumbent House Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections, igniting significant backlash among party leaders.

DNC Chair Ken Martin has pushed back against Hogg’s plans to primary Democratic incumbents, telling reporters on April 24 that Democratic Party officers “can’t be both the referee and also the player at the same time.” Martin also floated plans to change the DNC’s bylaw to require party officers to maintain neutrality in primary elections, according to Politico.

Relatedly, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on April 20 rebuffed Hogg’s plans to primary some incumbent Congressional Democrats, telling Jonathan Karl on ABC News’ “This Week” that he intends to stand behind “every single Democratic incumbent” in the 2026 midterms.
