An evening lockdown gripped Holloman Air Force Base after gunfire left one person dead and another injured, prompting a swift security response across the installation.
According to the New York Post, officials said the incident unfolded Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. local time at the base near Alamogordo, where reports of an active shooter forced authorities to shut down access and secure the area.
By later in the evening, security teams determined the situation was contained and lifted the lockdown across the sprawling 93-square-mile facility.
One individual was killed in the shooting, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities have not released the identities of either person.
Details about the suspect, including whether a gunman was apprehended or remains at large, were not immediately disclosed. Officials also did not clarify how the shooting began or what may have led up to it.
It remains unclear whether those involved were military personnel or civilians connected to the base.
In the aftermath, base officials announced that the installation’s convenience store, commonly referred to as the “shopette,” would be closed until further notice.
The base is home to the 49th Wing, a unit tasked with supporting national security operations and maintaining combat-ready airmen and guardians.
Authorities have yet to provide additional information as the investigation continues.
