Democratic presidential candidate Dean Phillips called for Democrats to “wake up” because President Joe Biden is going to get “creamed” by former President Donald Trump in the general election.
In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Phillips explained how he is “one candidate who can win” as opposed to Biden. He pointed out that as he has been campaigning, he’s been “listening” to voters on issues. Phillips explained that if elected, he would provide each baby that is born with a $1,000 endowment that would be added to throughout their high school years. He would also focus on issues such as education, healthcare, and the southern border.
“I’ve been listening and that’s what I do, when you campaign for any office, you listen to people,” Phillips told Tapper when asked about the difference between his and Biden’s policies. “And, I’ll tell you, it’s costs and chaos. When I’m president, I’m going to introduce something called, ‘American Dream Accounts,’ the federal government endowing every baby born in America with a $1,000 account that will grow through their years, early years, and through high school. They’ll actually learn about investing in high school and elementary school. When they turn 18, if they graduate high school, they get an account that would be worth up to $20,000, so that we actually have the equality of opportunity in this country.”
Phillips continued to explain that he would focus on education, childcare, having a “national health insurance program,” and building $7 million homes so that “every American” had one, the “chaos” in cities across the nation and the southern border.
“People are really fearful,” Phillips added. He continued:
“And, I’ll tell you something. Last night, I saw a Trump rally outside of mine. I walked up to the line of people, a mile long, and I simply said, ‘Hello.’ I was met with 50 people going to the Trump rally, who were friendly, hospitable, thoughtful and some who said they voted for Barack Obama. Some said they were Bernie Sanders supporters, about half of whom had never been to a Trump event before. So, to everybody watching right now, Donald Trump is on a big mission to win and Joe Biden is going to get creamed and I just wish Democrats would wake up and ensure that at least we give it our best shot because right now I’m afraid we are deluded into a nightmare.”
Several polls have shown Trump narrowly leading Biden. A poll from Redfield & Wilton Strategies conducted on Jan. 18 showed that 42% of voters supported Trump, while 41% of voters supported Biden.
Similarly, a Morning Consult poll conducted between Jan. 16 to 18 showed Trump with 43%, and Biden with 42%.
RealClearPolitics shows Trump leading Biden with an average of 47.2% while Biden sits at 44.3%. An Emerson College poll from Jan. 18 found that 49% of voters supported Trump, while 41% supported Biden.
Phillips has been critical of Biden and the Democratic National Committee for a lack of debates on the Democratic side and has claimed that the Biden campaign has pushed news outlets such as MSNBC to blackball him.
