Longtime Democratic megadonor John Morgan warned on Monday that Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s far-left record could hinder his chances of winning the presidency.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Politico on Friday that Newsom would “make a great president” and has promoted him privately as well as publicly, Axios reported on Sunday. Morgan said on NewsNation’s “CUOMO” that while having Pelosi’s support would aid fundraising, he was unsure whether Newsom could distance himself from his record as governor.

WATCH:

“Here’s his problem. And here’s what I told he his problem is: he decided to be the Democratic version of [President] Donald Trump. ‘You want to be mean, I’ll be mean. You want to be nasty, I’ll be nasty. You want to be an a-hole, I’ll be an a-hole.’ I told her, and I believe this, I think that’s a bad strategy,” Morgan said. “I think that by the time we get to 2028, America is going to be sick of meanness and chaos and that type of banter. But he’s decided that that’s going to help him. It gets him some money. People like meanness.”

Newsom has taken to imitating Trump, posting all-caps tirades and threats that echo the president’s style on social media.

“They may give him money, but in the long run, this is a horse race. And just because you’re leading out, because guess who else is leading?” Morgan continued. “[Former Transportation Secretary Pete] Buttigieg and [former Vice President Kamala] Harris. They’re not going anywhere. They’re never going to get out of the gate. So, it’s a long race. He’s got to be careful not to sprint too fast.”

Could Gavin Newsom's record as governor harm his 2028 presidential campaign?

Harris leads in 2028 Democratic primary polling, with Newsom second and Buttigieg third, according to the RealClearPolling average.

“His second problem, Chris, is going to be this: undoing everything he was for in California. Remember, $350,000 in reparations for each African-American,” Morgan told host Chris Cuomo. “He’s going to have to run from his woke …  How’s he going to deal with his transgender swimming positions and everything that brought him there? Usually when you’re a governor, that’s an asset. His problem is his record is far far left and far far woke. And can he do the [former Republican Utah Sen.] Mitt Romney etch-a-sketch? I don’t know.”

Although Newsom told slain Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on a March episode of “This Is Gavin Newsom” that biological males competing in female sports was “deeply unfair,” he has supported several policies in California that undermine women’s spaces. California’s Department of Education has also refused to comply with the Trump administration’s demand to bar males from female sports and spaces.

Kirk also confronted Newsom during the episode over California’s “Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today” Act, which prohibits any requirement for schools to notify parents regarding changes to their child’s gender identity.

Moreover, the governor faced backlash for saying he “want[s] to see trans kids” during a December episode of “The Ezra Klein Show.

Newsom signed a bill in 2022 making California a “sanctuary” for transgender-identifying children, enabling them to evade Republican-led state bans and parental consent laws and get sex change procedures.

“California is proud to have some of the most robust laws in the nation when it comes to protecting and supporting our LGBTQ+ community, and we’re committed to the ongoing work to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all Californians,” Newsom once said in a press release announcing the signing of several laws geared towards transgender children.
