Democrat Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey on Wednesday posted a job listing on X for his Boston office, specifically encouraging “BIPOC, LGBTQ+, working class, and other underrepresented candidates” to apply.

Democrats over the years have consistently advocated for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, expanding into sectors like business — most notably progressing federally under the Biden-Harris administration. In a post on X, the Democrat senator openly called for specific societal groups to apply for his office’s fall 2025 internship, notably leaving out any advocacy for white or male applicants.

“I’m hiring self-motivated and eager interns for fall 2025 in my Boston office. BIPOC, LGBTQ+, working class, and other underrepresented candidates with Massachusetts ties are encouraged to apply. Applications due Friday, August 8th,” Markey wrote.

With Markey’s website listing open options for interns at his Boston office, the qualifications for the role say the program is for undergraduate bachelor’s and associate degree students, with applicants needing to be “self-starters who possess strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills.”

The role calls for candidates to have the “ability to both work independently and well with others, as well as possess strong task delegation and completion skills.” The application additionally includes “veterans” as part of those encouraged to apply — which had not been mentioned in the senator’s post.

“This office is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on race, religion, disability, age, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, family status or military status,” the website states. “Candidates from BIPOC, LGBT+, working class, and/or other underrepresented communities with Massachusetts ties are strongly encouraged to apply.”

Since President Donald Trump entered office for his second term in January, businesses like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. have begun to eliminate their implementations against white and male members.

In February, the investment company announced it would end its 2020 policy that required only taking a company public in the U.S. or Western Europe if it had at least two diverse board members, including one required to be a woman. While others like Target, Walmart and Boeing have followed suit in scaling back DEI measures, others, like Costco, have pushed forward despite a backlash.

Markey’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
