Actor Dennis Quaid has detailed some of the devastation caused by the California wildfires currently ripping through Los Angeles.
During an interview with Fox News host Jessie Watters, Quaid said he credits the firefighters for making a difference in saving his home and those of his neighbors.
“I can’t say enough about the firefighters who have been here, they’ve really made the difference, they’re the guys running in when everybody else is running out,” Quaid said, “They made a difference right here on my block, I have to say the fire was not more than a … 150 yards away from taking out the whole block.”
Quaid, who has lived in Los Angeles for several decades, said this is the worst wildfire he has seen in his time as a resident.
“There’s been several fires here in California in my 45-years that I’ve been around here, and this is the worst one bar none. Came up so suddenly,” Quaid said, noting he suddenly noticed a lot of smoke around his home.
According to a report from BBC News, there are at least five separate fires raging, with the largest two spreading across more than 27,000 acres. Five people have lost their lives, and over 100,000 have been evacuated.
Quaid once again credited firefighters for helping save the lives of those who live in the area by acting decisively, despite local residents going into a panic after the fires began to spread quickly.
“Those poor people up in the highlands — people lost everything in just a few minutes and thank God that I hear that as far as the deaths and the injuries that have been in this have been very low. I hope that continues to be the case, and I think we can credit that a lot to the firefighters that have come in and help rescue and then saved people’s property and keep things working,” Quaid said.
When asked whether he feels let down by the California government, Quaid said the lack of infrastructure and water in the Pacific Palisades are adding to the problem of frequent wildfires.
“This has been a problem here in California, just an inherent problem in California … But, no water, no water in the Palisades, the infrastructure has been a big problem around here and where we should spend the money,” Quaid said.
