The strange and tragic discovery was made early Sunday morning at the Little Havana location, just as employees were arriving to open the store for business.
According to the Miami Police Department, 32-year-old Helen Massiell Garay Sanchez was found unresponsive inside the store’s stockroom cooler around 8 a.m. Public Information Officer Michael Vega confirmed that the woman was located inside the walk-in freezer, which is typically off-limits to the public. Police dispatchers reportedly noted over the scanners that the woman was found with no clothing on.
“Complainant found a naked female in the cooler of the store,” one dispatcher was heard saying, as reported by CBS News.
Investigators have reviewed surveillance footage and, as of now, say there appears to be no foul play involved. That said, authorities have not released a final cause of death, and the investigation remains open. It’s also not clear why Dr. Sanchez was inside the restricted area in the first place — or how long she had been there.
What we do know is that this was not just some random passerby. According to a GoFundMe campaign launched by her family, Helen Sanchez was an accomplished anesthesiologist originally from Nicaragua. She specialized in congenital heart disease, a highly complex and critical field of medicine. The campaign describes her death as a “tragic accident while abroad,” and notes that she leaves behind two young children who still live in her home country.
Her family is now trying to raise funds to bring her body home to Nicaragua for a proper funeral. As of Monday evening, the effort had raised more than $9,000 toward their goal. “Her family’s greatest wish is to bring her back to Nicaragua for a proper funeral and final resting place, surrounded by her loved ones,” the GoFundMe page reads.
Meanwhile, the Dollar Tree store was temporarily closed during the initial investigation but later reopened on Sunday, according to reports from the Daily Mail. The company has yet to release an official statement about the incident, and it’s unclear if Dr. Sanchez had any connection to the store or its employees.
