About Marcian

Marcian fue emperador romano de Oriente desde 450 hasta 457. Se sabe muy poco de su vida antes de convertirse en emperador, aparte de que fue un domesticus que sirvió bajo los comandantes Ardabur y su hijo Aspar durante quince años. Tras la muerte del emperador Theodosius II el 28 de julio de 450, Marcian fue convertido en candidato al trono por Aspar, quien tenía mucha influencia debido a su poder militar. Después de un mes de negociaciones Pulcheria, hermana de Theodosius, accedió a casarse con Marcian. Zeno, un líder militar cuya influencia era similar a la de Aspar, pudo haber estado involucrado en estas negociaciones, ya que se le otorgó el título cortesano de alto rango de patricio tras la ascensión de Marcian. Marcian fue elegido e inaugurado el 25 de agosto de 450.
