A Virginia court accepted a man’s plea deal on Thursday after he gunned down a charity CEO in bed in his home, according to multiple reports.

Joshua Danehower of Arlington will spend an unspecified amount of time in a state-run mental health center instead of prison over the June 2022 murder of Gret Glyer, head of the now-defunct charitable giving platform DonorSee, local media outlets reported. Danehower premeditated the slaying with a written plan describing Glyer’s location, lockpicking and escape tactics, all based on an obsession with Glyer’s wife, prosecutors reportedly said.

“An evil man took his life in the middle of the night. A coward,” said Glyer’s mother, Silvia, after learning of the agreement, according to WUSA9. “Somebody who planned step by step a murder and who is backed up by the justice system in Virginia.”

The Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, which rubber-stamped the deal with Danehower’s legal defense, did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. Democratic Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano was a federal prosecutor in the Obama administration for six years before taking office in Virginia in 2020, his office’s website says. The county official faced two recall efforts over criticism that he is too soft on crime, according to Ballotpedia.

Should a plea deal for the killer be allowed over prison time?

The court scheduled a May 21 hearing to decide next steps for Danehower, FFXnow reported.

Danehower went on a date with Glyer’s wife a decade before the murder and became fixated on her, investigators found. Decsano’s office previously determined it was unlikely to get Danehower convicted after two doctors declared him insane when committing the crime, according to the outlet.

“Every year we have to live in fear of his release if the doctors and lawyers on his case decide that he is safe to be returned to society,” Gizan Glyer, the victim’s sister, reportedly said.

“There’s overwhelming evidence,” Glyer’s father, Grid, said, according to FFXnow. “Instead, he’ll never spend a day in prison, and we, the family, are the ones who’ve been sentenced for the rest of our lives.”
