The football world is mourning the violent death of former NFL defensive lineman Kevin Johnson after authorities confirmed the circumstances surrounding his passing.

According to the New York Post, Johnson died Wednesday at a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Officials announced Thursday that the 55-year-old’s cause of death was “blunt head trauma and stab wounds.”

The manner of his death was ruled a homicide, and investigators say the case remains under active investigation.

Johnson had recently marked his 55th birthday in October.

A Los Angeles native, Johnson carved out a professional football career that spanned both the NFL and the Arena Football League.

He first entered the league in 1993, when he was selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the New England Patriots.

His early years in the league were spent moving between teams, but his most productive stretch came after he joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995.

That season, Johnson appeared in 11 games for Philadelphia and made one start. He recorded six sacks, totaled 19 combined tackles, and scored a touchdown after returning a fumble.

Johnson returned to the Eagles for the 1996 season, playing in 12 games. He added one sack and finished the year with 24 total tackles.

He closed out his NFL career in 1997 with the Oakland Raiders, appearing in 15 games before stepping away from the league.

Following his time in the NFL, Johnson continued his football journey in the Arena Football League. He suited up for the Orlando Predators and the Los Angeles Avengers, finding success in the indoor game.

During his Arena Football League career, Johnson won one Arena Bowl.

Before reaching the professional ranks, Johnson played college football at Texas Southern, where he developed into a standout defensive lineman and laid the groundwork for his pro career.

News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief online.

Johnson’s son, along with other friends and family members, reportedly shared tributes and messages of remembrance on social media, reflecting on his life, career, and impact on those closest to him.

As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death, former teammates, fans, and loved ones are left grappling with the tragic end of a man whose life once revolved around football, but ended far from the stadium lights.
