Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) is suggesting former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) would be a “terrific” pick for a new job.
In a post on X, Gaetz shared a report that claimed McCarthy is a “dark horse candidate” to replace Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
“I fully endorse Kevin McCarthy for RNC Chair. Kevin is well organized and a very high-revenue fundraiser. He will also be well-liked by the RNC Committee,” the Florida Republican wrote.
He continued, “The RNC Chair doesn’t make any policy decisions, set any agenda, or negotiate against Democrats, ever.”
“Kevin would be terrific,” Gaetz insisted.

Gaetz was one of McCarthy’s main Republican opponents during his brief time as speaker.
In Jan. 2023, he opposed the California Republican’s bid to win the speaker’s gavel, which led to 15 rounds of voting.
And in October, Gaetz introduced a measure to vacate the chair and successfully ousted McCarthy as speaker.
In December, McCarthy announced he would retire from Congress.
“McLeavin,” Gaetz posted in response.
