Gayle King and Billy Joel are defending singer Justin Timberlake after he was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
“Justin Timberlake is a really, really great guy,” Gayle said on CBS Mornings.“Listen, this is clearly a mistake.”
Cohost Nate Burleson chimed in, calling it a “stupid mistake,” eonline reported.
King agreed.
“Exactly — and he knows that,” King said. “But he’s not an irresponsible person. He’s not reckless. He’s not careless. Clearly, this is not a good thing. He knows that.”
Joel, a music legend in his own right, was asked his take on the arrest.
“Judge not lest ye be judged,” Joel told PIX11 News.
Timberlake was arrested June 18 in Sag Harbor, New York, according to NBC News.
According to the criminal complaint Timberlake was pulled over for driving through a stop sign and not staying on the right side of the road.
Police “ascertained that the defendant was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”
Reports indicate Timberlake declined to be tested for impairment.
He said he had “one martini.”
He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.
His next court date is July 26.
Edward Burke Jr., his attorney, said Wednesday: “I look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake on these allegations. I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office.”
