A House Republican is facing a question about his assertion Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has matured since first entering Congress.

ABC’s Martha Raddatz noted during a segment of “This Week” the Georgia congresswoman called for a “national divorce” on Presidents Day.

She brought up her guest’s, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), previous assertion Greene had “matured” and is “trying to become a team player.”

“Do you still think that when you hear something like that?” she asked.

McCaul responded, “I don’t speak for her. The great thing about this country is we can have political dialogue, discourse, we are a democracy. We can have differences of opinions.”

“I will say divisive rhetoric, I think, polarizes this nation, and I think it hurts this nation,” he continued. “I think what we need today is a voice that can unify the nation on things that really matter — like the economy, like the border, like the largest invasion in Europe since World War II.”

In January, McCaul was asked about Greene receiving an appointment to the House Homeland Security Committee despite previously espousing conspiracy theories — including doubting whether the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened.

Raddatz noted the congresswoman apologized for her sharing conspiracy theories about the attacks.

McCaul, who previously chaired the committee, said, “These conspiracy theories that people go down, I disagree with those. I’m having to debunk this. This one was the worst violation; 9/11 was not a hoax. It was carried out by al Qaeda. There’s no question in my mind.”

However, he stated, “I will tell you, [Greene] has matured. I think she realizes she doesn’t know everything, and she wants to learn and become, I think, more of a team player.”

Weeks after McCaul’s initial comments, Greene issued a call on Twitter for a “national divorce” where the U.S. would “separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.”

“From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done,” she insisted.

She later shared a lengthy tweet thread explaining her vision for a scenario of a “national divorce.”

In her vision, states would agree to a “legal agreement to separate our ideological and political disagreements by states while maintaining our legal union.”
