Vice president-elect Kamala Harris is set to become the first woman vice president.

Time magazine named Harris along with President-elect Joe Biden as the 2020 “Person of the Year.” Harris was the first vice president-elect to be named for the “Person of the Year” by Time.

During an interview with Time’s senior correspondent Charlotte Alter, Harris spoke about becoming the first. As Times writes, “The Vice President has never before been a woman, or Black, or Asian American.”

“It is one of my responsibilities,” Harris said. “My mother had many sayings. She would say, ‘Kamala, you may be the first to do many things; make sure you’re not the last.'”

She continued, “Which is why [in my victory speech], I said, ‘I will be the first, but I will not be the last.'”

“And that’s about legacy. That’s about creating a pathway. That’s about leaving the door more open than it was when you walked in.”

The Biden-Harris ticket represents something historic.

When asked what she would like to do first after Inauguration Day, Harris noted there is “a lot.”

“We’re talking about a public-health crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, has infected tens of millions. We are in the midst of an economic crisis that’s being compared to the Great Depression,” she said.

She continued, “A long overdue reckoning on racial injustice. And a climate crisis. We have to be able to multitask, just like any parent or any human being does.”

Inauguration Day will be on Jan. 20, 2021.
