Retired Gen. Mark Milley is losing his personal security detail and security clearance, senior administration officials told Fox News.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has told Milley about the move, the Pentagon said.
Hegseth is also having new acting Inspector General investigate whether a star should be stripped in retirement because of his actions to “undermine the chain of command” during President Donald Trump’s first term, officials said.
Defense Department chief of staff Joe Kasper said, per NBC News, it’s due to “Undermining the chain of command is corrosive to our national security, and restoring accountability is a priority for the Defense Department under President Trump’s leadership.”
Milley’s second portrait will be removed from inside the Pentagon, Fox News reported.
This portrait is from the Army’s Marshall Corridor on the third floor. It honors his service as chief-of-staff of the Army.
Once that portrait is removed, no more portraits of Milley will be hung in the Pentagon.
The first portrait of Milley — from his time as the U.S. military’s top officer — was removed from the Pentagon on Inauguration Day.
Milley and other former senior Trump aides were assigned personal security details after Iran vowed revenge for the killing of Qasem Soleimani in 2020.
Tom Cotton, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told “Fox News Sunday,” he hoped President Trump would reconsider pulling the protective security details from John Bolton, Mike Pompeo and Brian Hook.
All three previously served under Trump.
A senior administration official, who requested anonymity, said these moves were being made to be more accountable.
“There is a new era of accountability in the Defense Department under President Trump’s leadership — and that’s exactly what the American people expect,” the official said.
Milley served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2019 to 2023.
