A terrifying stabbing spree at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, could have ended in far greater tragedy — but one armed citizen had other plans.
In a dramatic scene captured on video, an armed bystander stepped up and brought a violent rampage to a halt. Authorities say 11 people were stabbed by a man wielding a folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade on Saturday, according to Fox News.
But it was Derrick Perry, a Marine veteran, who confronted the attacker in the parking lot, firearm in hand, shouting “Drop the knife!” along with other bystanders.
“What they did was amazing,” said Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, speaking at a press conference on Sunday. He confirmed that Perry and other courageous citizens managed to end the bloody attack without firing a single shot — detaining the suspect until deputies arrived.
“First of all, I commend them. It’s not very often that we have citizens that are willing to step up and take action, and I ask that we grant them the privacy that they need right now,” Shea added. “If they choose to make a public statement, they will. But I would ask that we all just give them a little space and say, attaboy.”
The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Bradford James Gille, of Afton, Michigan. Officials say he acted alone and now faces terrorism charges and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. His motive? Still a mystery.
According to Munson Healthcare, all 11 victims — aged 29 to 84 — are expected to survive. As of Monday morning, one had been released, five were in fair condition, two were in good condition, one was in serious condition, and two others had been transferred for further treatment.
Social media lit up with praise for Perry’s decisive intervention. A post from the Overheard in Traverse City Facebook group declared: “This is Derrick Perry! He is the hero from today’s stabbing at Walmart, he is the man that took his gun out and risked his own life to save many lives! Thank you so much Derrick.”
His daughter chimed in, calling it a “proud daughter moment,” while his daughter-in-law labeled him a “true hero.” The National Association for Gun Rights weighed in as well, posting on X that Perry is a “good guy with a gun” whose courage “deserves recognition.”
The fact that a Marine veteran, trained and armed, was there to confront evil in the moment — without a shot fired — is making headlines for all the right reasons. While investigators search for answers about the attacker’s motive, one thing is crystal clear: it could’ve been much worse. But a hero with a gun made sure it wasn’t.
