A quiet vacation property in Central California is now at the center of a disturbing criminal case after investigators say it was used to store illegal material and secretly record unsuspecting guests.
According to the New York Post, authorities allege that 44-year-old Christian Parmalee Edwards, of Oakhurst in Madera County, was taken into custody Monday after detectives uncovered more than 4,000 files of suspected child sexual abuse material inside the home he also rented out to short-term visitors.
The Fresno Bee reported that the case began with a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which flagged potential online distribution activity tied to the area.
That tip led law enforcement to execute a search warrant Thursday at the Granite Butte Way property. During the search, officials seized multiple electronic devices that are now undergoing forensic analysis.
Detectives claim the allegations go beyond possession and distribution. Edwards is also accused of secretly recording guests during private moments inside the rental without their knowledge, resulting in additional invasion of privacy charges.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify anyone who may have stayed at the property and could be considered a potential victim. An image of the home has been circulated publicly as part of that effort.
Edwards remains behind bars with bail set at $75,000. He has not yet entered a plea.
“Protecting the innocent, upholding the law, and holding offenders accountable remains a top priority,” said Tyson Pogue, underscoring the department’s focus on public safety as the case develops.
The arrest comes amid a broader rise in online exploitation cases.
The Internet Watch Foundation reported 291,273 instances of child sexual abuse material in 2024, marking the highest number ever recorded and averaging nearly 800 reports per day.
