Many “Home Alone” fans were left shocked after a TikTok user calculated that Kevin McCallister’s grocery bill would cost more than $60 in today’s economy.
Geoffrey Lyons calculated the math of Kevin buying items such as, a TV dinner meal, a loaf of Wonder Bread, frozen mac and cheese, cling wrap, half a gallon of milk, tide laundry detergent, toilet paper, half a gallon of orange juice, pack of army men and dryer sheets.
In the scene, Kevin gives the cashier a $20 bill for his groceries, which totals $19.83. Lyons calculated that in today’s economy, Kevin’s groceries would cost him $63.73 and after tax, $68. This represents a “248% increase,” Lyons notes in his video, even with Kevin’s coupon saving him $1 off of the orange juice.

“So, I broke it down,” Lyons says. “$4.50 for the orange juice. $4.50 for the saran wrap, TV dinner: couldn’t find the exact same one, so we did $5 for that one because it had the food inside. $13 for the tide, $3 for the Wonder Bread, $3.50 for the frozen mac, $4.60 for the milk. You got $8.79 for the dryer sheets, you got $8.00 for the toilet paper, and you got just shy of $9 for the toy soldiers.”
In response to Lyons’ video, several people chimed in with witty responses.
“I bet the cashiers wage is still the same in 2023,” one person wrote.
Another person pointed out that “tide alone is almost 20 $ now.”
“Ok, but you used Target prices and those are arguably higher,” one person pointed out.
“Buy the same stuff at aldi you spent 35$,” another person wrote.
One person revealed that in 2003, her grocery bill for her family of five people came out to “$120 a week” and now it’s, “$350 for 2 of us.”
