An active shooter opened fire at a Catholic school for young children in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday, according to officials and news coverage.
The shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic School, which teaches kindergarteners through eighth-graders, while the students were in a morning Mass service, FOX6 Milwaukee reported, citing neighbors at the scene. Two children aged 8 and 10 “were killed where they sat in the pews” and 17 other people were injured before the gunman fatally shot himself, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a press conference. Fourteen of the 17 injured are children, the chief said.
Police also said a man dressed in black with a rifle was reported at the scene, according to KARE11 and FOX9.
The City of Minneapolis posted on X that “the shooter is contained” and that “there is no active threat to the community at this time.”
“Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims,” the city wrote.
“I’ve been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and will continue to provide updates as we get more information,” Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in an X post, adding that state law enforcement agencies are on the scene. “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X that her Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “is monitoring the horrific shooting” and communicating with “interagency partners.”
President Donald Trump also posted on Truth Social that the FBI is on the scene and that “the White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation.”
