NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 6: An ICE agent monitors hundreds of asylum seekers being processed upon entering the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building on June 6, 2023 in New York City. New York City has provided sanctuary to over 46,000 asylum seekers since 2013, when the city passed a law prohibiting city agencies from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement agencies unless there is a warrant for the person's arrest.(Photo by David Dee Delgado/Getty Images)

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a Moldovan national in Los Angeles who was convicted of a brutal murder involving torture and the killing of a victim thrown from a ninth-floor window.

According to Fox News, authorities said Victoria Sorocean was taken into custody on Nov. 4 after ICE officials learned of her 2013 conviction for premeditated murder with exceptional cruelty in Moldova.

According to ICE, Sorocean and an accomplice tortured their victim inside an apartment in Chisinau, beating the person with a stick and an electrical cable before throwing the victim out the window. The victim died as a result of the attack.

Sorocean was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the crime but fled Moldova to avoid serving her sentence, ICE said.

Federal officials did not immediately say how long Sorocean had been in the United States or how she entered the country.

Should the U.S. focus on deporting convicted foreign criminals like Victoria Sorocean?

ICE confirmed that she was arrested without incident and is now in custody pending removal proceedings.

“This individual committed an unspeakably violent act and sought to evade justice,” an ICE spokesperson told Fox News. “Our officers remain committed to ensuring that those who commit heinous crimes abroad cannot find refuge in the United States.”

The agency said it coordinated with international law enforcement to confirm Sorocean’s identity and criminal background before making the arrest.

ICE has not released further details about when she may be deported or whether Moldovan authorities have requested her extradition.

This is a developing story.
