Federal authorities arrested over 120 illegal immigrant drivers in Houston last week as part of a larger investigation into a loophole in Texas that allegedly allows individuals without legal immigration status to register vehicles. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out the arrests in a single day, targeting drivers who were reportedly operating vehicles without proper licenses or insurance.
ICE officials said the effort was focused on keeping Texas roads safer by removing what they called “dangerous, often unlicensed and uninsured, illegal aliens who should NOT be behind the wheel.” According to the agency, the arrests were part of a coordinated enforcement push under the Trump administration’s broader focus on immigration enforcement and public safety.
The arrests have drawn attention to a legal concern in Texas. Republican State Representative Brian Harrison is now pressing state officials for answers. His office sent a letter to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Board demanding clarification on how individuals who lack legal status are allegedly still able to register vehicles in the state.
In his letter, Rep. Harrison called for urgent action, stating, “The Texas government should be a force multiplier of President Trump’s efforts to combat illegal immigration, not enabling or incentivizing it.” He added, “It is past time the Texas government starts acting like we are in a battle for the future of western civilization, because we are. I’m demanding action now!”
Harrison pointed to current Texas law, which he says gives the state broad power to determine what kind of personal identification is needed when someone registers a vehicle. He asked whether the DMV is currently checking to confirm that the person registering the vehicle is legally present in the country.
“I am writing today to inquire what steps, if any, the DMV has taken and is implementing to determine whether the owner of the vehicle is a citizen or lawfully in the country before issuing vehicle registrations,” Harrison wrote. He warned that if the DMV fails to act quickly, he plans to file legislation that would require lawful status verification before registration can be approved.
This is not the first time the issue of illegal immigrants driving has made headlines in Texas and around the country. ICE has also been cracking down on individuals using commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued by other states, such as California. According to ICE, many of the individuals they’ve arrested were allegedly carrying California-issued CDLs without meeting the legal requirements for residency. These cases have come under closer review following a number of serious traffic accidents on U.S. highways involving commercial trucks driven by non-domiciled operators.
The Trump administration has ordered agencies like ICE and the Department of Transportation to take stronger action against the misuse of CDLs and state loopholes that could put public safety at risk.

Rep. Harrison’s office and ICE have both indicated that further investigations are ongoing. The Texas DMV has not yet released a public statement in response to the letter or to reports of the recent arrests.
As the investigation unfolds, state officials may face pressure from lawmakers and residents alike to revisit policies on vehicle registration and immigration status verification, especially as road safety remains a major concern in high-traffic areas like Houston.
